Headcanon based off of the episode Human Nature (Doctor Who):

Joan was madly in love with John Smith. She was willing to spend the rest of her life with him. It wasn’t his leaving that cured her. It wasn’t his unhuman nature that caused her to find a new love and build a life for herself. It was his journal…

When the Doctor left, he left his journal with her. A piece of him to keep. She searched the journal every day, reading about the life she could never have with him. Dreaming of being by his side… or better yet, him by hers. But one day. She came upon a journal entry she wasn’t expecting…

A page about a girl who filled Mr. Smith’s dreams. He described her in such lovely ways… said that he dreamed of her kiss. Something about all of time and space in her eyes. He wrote of how he saw her in his dreams and his heart would skip a beat. Even as an image she left him breathless. This girl in his journal… the last thing he wrote about her was this, “None of this jargon seems real. It all must be an elaborate dream. But her… if nothing else, I believe in her.”

At that moment Joan new, even when Mr. Smith had proclaimed a love for her, he was truly loving the girl with eternity in her eyes. If Mr. Smith, this Doctor, could try to love her instead of the girl… then Joan could love another as well. After all, the Doctor was never truly hers anyway….
